Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Sirmione, a silent tribute to Mediterranean beauty
This oil painting by Swetlana Kowal, created in 2019 during her Plein Air project in Italy, captures an enchanting moment in the courtyard of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Sirmione. The scene is calm and warm at the same time. It also takes the viewer into an atmosphere reminiscent of early summer mornings, when the light falls gently on the old walls. Even at first glance, a feeling of quiet connection with this special place is created.
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Sirmione, depiction of the inner courtyard
The spacious inner courtyard of the old church takes center stage. The view leads across the shimmering red floor, whose geometric lines create a slightly playful rhythm. On the left is an old, stone planter filled with vibrant flowers. Behind it, a round arch opens up, supported by slender columns. On the right is a large tree, its crown painted in cool shades of blue and green, casting soft shadows on the steps of the entrance. The pastel-colored facades, the small shutters and the weathered structure of the walls tell of the long history of this place.
Coloring and painting technique
Kowal works here with soft, harmonious color transitions. The warm rosé and ochre tones of the walls contrast subtly with the cool turquoise nuances of the shutters. Nevertheless, the interplay never appears harsh, but smooth and lively. The artist uses impasto brushstrokes that lend depth and structure to the surface. In addition, the densely placed color fields create a play of light that covers the entire inner courtyard. The result is a lively yet calm overall picture that captures the typical atmosphere of historic Sirmione.
Atmospheric effect
The painting radiates a pleasantly tranquil atmosphere. The courtyard looks deserted, but not empty. Instead, it seems to be waiting for a quiet moment when someone walks up the steps or lingers in the shade of the tree. The picture therefore invites you to immerse yourself in this place and feel the gentle warmth of the Italian sun. It conveys tranquillity, timeless beauty and a quiet reverence for old buildings.
Use and effect in the room
This work is ideal for galleries presenting Mediterranean themes. It is also a meaningful gift for lovers of Italian architecture and tranquil, poetic motifs. In private collections, it brings a warm, elegant atmosphere to living rooms, studies or reception areas. The painting thus becomes a constant companion, always revealing new, subtle details.
